How to Prolong the Life of Your Roof
Even if you’re easily intimidated by even the smallest of your home maintenance tasks, fear not – keeping your roof healthy doesn’t require terrible amounts of advanced knowledge. Even if you are a complete and total novice you can still be a pretty effective care giver for your roof. Here are a few different things to look for on your roof and what to do if you see them.
- Keep those gutters clean – Sometimes the most important parts of home maintenance are keeping up with the most simple and rudimentary tasks. For your roof, this means always keeping your gutters clean and in good shape. Gutters should be cleaned at least once a year, typically in the fall before winter really kicks in. Keeping your gutters clean is important because it allows water to flow off of your roof.
- Watch out for rogue tree limbs – Every once in a while, take a good hard look at the trees that are around your house. Are any of them beginning to encroach on your roofs personal space? If so, get rid of those wily branches – your roof does NOT want branches resting on top of it.
- Be wary of mold – This is a little bit more complicated than cleaning your gutters or watching out for branches because it’s not always easy to identify mold that’s growing on your roof. If you feel like there is a good chance that what you see on your roof is mold, instantly be proactive about the problem. There are many effective products that can help rid your roof of mold.
- Give you roof a bath – Once a year, give your roof a real nice scrub down. Make sure you get rid of all the dirt and debris that have built up.
