Teething Tips: Help Relieve Your Baby’s Discomfort
Nothing is worse than watching your little baby suffer through pain and misery. Unfortunately, every baby has to go through the absolutely miserable process of teething. This is a time when your baby is undoubtedly going to be incredibly cranky and fussy – let’s face it, you probably would too if you had brand new teeth forcing their way through your gums! Here’s the good news: there are many ways you can help reduce some of your baby’s discomfort as they go through this important yet painful transition. Here are tips to help make your baby more comfortable during teething.
- Give your baby a gum massage – Gently use your clean finger or a damp washcloth to rub and massage the swollen portions of your child’s gums. By creating pressure on their gums, you can help to relieve some of their pain. Just remember to always be very calm and gentle.
- Keep their mouth chilled – Place a cool wash cloth against the cheeks of a cranky teether can definitaly help make their mouths hurt less. Avoid giving your baby anything that is completely frozen – if something is too cold, it may actual cause damage instead of relief.
- Try a teething ring – Opt for a teething ring that is made from solid rubber instead of the liquid filled variety. This is because liquid teething rings have been known to break under the stress of prolonged chewing.
- If all else fails… – Try using some type of over the counter pain medicine. Never give a small child anything close to an adult dosage of any type of medicine. Ask your pharmacist for advice on what OTC medicine is right for your child.
Remember, teething is only a small phase of your child’s life. Even though it may be (at times) pretty brutal, these tips will help make it go a lot more smoothly.
