How to be a Good Homework-Helper
It’s a pretty well accepted fact that the more involved parents are with their children’s school the work the better. Being a good homework-helper doesn’t just mean forcing your kids to do their homework – it means that you will teach them to be both responsible and good learners. Here are some ways parents can be good homework-helpers.
- It’s always hard to feel like you are being the bad guy, but it’s very important that you make sure your kids don’t engage themselves in television or video games before their homework is done. This doesn’t mean that you have to start nagging them the second they get home from school – kids need a little bit of downtime after a long day. But maintain strict and firm rules that ensure your children will take care of their responsibilities before enjoying leisure activities.
- Create a homework sanctuary for your kids. Just like you probably have a desk or office area that you go to when you need to get work done, your kids need a designated area where they do homework. Having a specific work area will help them stay focused and engaged when they are doing their homework.
- Give your children praise when they are doing well! When they study hard for a test and do well, make them feel great about themselves. This will make them realize that all the hard work they do at home pays off.
- Perhaps the most signifigant way you can be a good homework-helper is this: always be available to assist your kids with their work. If they feel like they always have a reliable ally in their war with homework, they will feel a lot more relaxed and confident about doing it.
